To promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils

St. Edward's Church of England Primary School is a Voluntary Controlled School, which means that it is controlled or run by the local Education Authority, but with church influence in certain areas.

Three members of our church represent St. Martin's on the governing body of the school, elected by the P.C.C., and the co-opted member may also be a church member, although nominally representing the local business community.

The school is a modern, open plan building with approximately 325 on the roll, spread over seven school years.  The children are vertically grouped with the exception of the reception children, who are in two single age classes.  There are then two classes of years one and two classes for year two children, three classes of years three and four children and three classes of years five and six children.  The children are not streamed , but may be grouped for some subjects, some of the time.

The aim of the school is to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of all pupils and to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.  The school also believes that all pupils will be regarded as of equal value at whatever stage of the educational process.  What children can do, not what they cannot do is the starting point in children's education.

St. Edward's offers a safe environment with an established routine and a consistent framework.  The children learn through first hand experience, through a range of activities, events and materials which are planned in a progressive way.  The children are taught to be independent, making choices and sharing in responsibility for their own learning.  The environment is organized so that equipment has a definite place and is accessible to the children at all times.

The children are encouraged to develop a positive attitude to their own and other cultures, to develop personal relationships, to adopt the principles of  a healthy lifestyle and to develop awareness of themselves and sensitivity to others and to their environment so that they develop the capacity to sustain good, sound relationships and become valued members of society.
